Hold an instruction permit for at least 12 months
The first step in the process of earning your license is getting your temporary instruction permit. Though you can take your classroom drivers education portion before holding this permit, you are not able to get behind the wheel of a car without the permit.
Compete drivers education
Driver’s education provides the foundational skills you need to be a safe, defensive driver. Not only do you learn the rules of the road, you also get to troubleshoot potential problems you may face with your peers and experienced driving education instructor. At Freedom Drivers Ed, we offer drivers education both in person and online. If you choose to take in-person drivers education, we have flexible scheduling and classes are offered at multiple locations throughout Douglas County.
Complete six hours of behind-the-wheel training
Part of your drivers education is completing behind-the-wheel training with a professional driving school instructor in the passenger seat. While you will also need to spend 50 hours driving with a licensed driver, the six hours of BTW training are invaluable. Our driving school instructors are experienced at helping students build good driving habits, and this practical skill portion is one of the most important parts of drivers education.
Our driving school offers free pick-up and drop-off at work, school, or home throughout Douglas County and parts of Arapahoe County. We want to make it as easy as possible for students to complete their BTW training. Each session is completed in a newer model vehicle equipped with a passenger brake.
Complete 50 hours of supervised driving
Along with the six hours spent driving with a driving school instructor, students are also required to complete 50 hours of practice with a licensed passenger who will guide and supervise the students driving to ensure they become the best driver they can be. While you drive, you will fill out drive time log sheets. At least 10 hours of the 50 hours completed must be at night. It’s helpful to complete these driving hours in diverse settings, like the mountains, city, and during bad weather.
Pass the drivers license test
You can take your required drive test here with us at Freedom Drivers Ed without having to go to the DMV. When you pass the test, we’ll provide you with a “drive test completion form” that you’ll need to take with you when you apply for your license.
Apply in person with the required paperwork
When you’re ready to take the driver’s license test, you’ll need to arrive in person with the paperwork necessary to take the test and earn your driver’s license. You’ll need to bring the following items:
- Valid instruction permit
- Completed drive time log sheet with the signature of a parent or guardian to verify hours
- Behind the wheel completion certification that we will give you when you finish your six hours
- Proof of your Social Security number
- Proof of current physical Colorado address
- Application fee
- If you completed your driver’s license test with a driving school like Freedom Drivers Ed, you’ll also need to bring the “drive test completion form.”
Pass the vision exam
You will need to pass a vision exam to prove that you will be able to drive safely. If you wear glasses or contacts, simply wear those and let the DMV staff know.
Get your license!
After you’ve completed all of these steps, you’ll be given your Colorado driver’s license and be able to drive on your own! The day you get your driver’s license is a big milestone. It takes a lot of work to get to this spot, so take some time to celebrate and drive yourself and your parent or guardian to dinner to thank them for helping you get to this moment!
